IJM Construction secures RM561 million in contracts for data centre and industrial manufacturing facility
PETALING JAYA, 19 August 2024 – IJM Construction Sdn Bhd (“IJM Construction”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of IJM Corporation Berhad (“IJM” or “the Group”), has secured two contracts worth a combined RM561 million. These projects include a data centre in Johor and an industrial manufacturing facility in Penang, showcasing IJM Construction’s strengths in fast-track, high-tech infrastructure development.
Woh Hup Malaysia-IJM Construction JV to build data centre in Johor
A 50:50 joint venture between Woh Hup Malaysia Sdn Bhd (“Woh Hup”) and IJM Construction has been awarded a RM508 million contract from an international data centre developer.
The project involves the construction of two data centre buildings in Gelang Patah, Johor. Building 1 is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2025, and Building 2 in the first quarter of 2026.
Woh Hup (Private) Limited, an established pioneer in Singapore’s construction industry, is one of the nation's largest privately-owned and oldest construction and civil engineering firms, with nearly a century of experience. Woh Hup secured its first data centre project in 2016 and has since completed six data centres in India, Indonesia and Singapore for international data centre developers.
The collaboration between Woh Hup and IJM Construction, two leading construction firms in Singapore and Malaysia, leverages their combined experience, expertise, resources and pre-cast facilities, ensuring the efficient execution of fast-track industrial developments such as data centres.
New E&E manufacturing and warehousing facility in Penang
IJM Construction has also secured a RM307 million contract for the construction of a new E&E manufacturing and warehousing facility in Batu Kawan, Penang. This state-of-the-art 560,000-square-foot facility, located on a 20-acre plot within the Bandar Cassia Technology Park, is for a U.S.-based company in the electrical and electronic (E&E) sector. The facility aims to support growth in the semiconductor capital equipment and healthcare device markets by developing the E&E supply chain ecosystem. Construction of the facility is set to begin in August 2024, with completion expected by October 2025.
IJM Construction will implement IJM’s SMART IBS (Industrialised Building System) for the E&E manufacturing and warehousing facility, leveraging its advanced construction methods to enhance efficiency, reduce build time and ensure superior quality. Both the E&E facility and the data centre project will utilise pretensioned high-strength concrete spun piles from the Group’s Industry Division. This approach minimises environmental impact and showcases the Group’s vertically integrated construction capabilities, ensuring streamlined project execution. Notably, both the SMART IBS and the spun piles have received green certifications, namely the SIRIM Eco Label and MyHIJAU, underscoring their environmental credentials.
Lee Chun Fai, Group CEO & Managing Director of IJM Corporation Berhad, commented: “Securing these contracts highlights IJM Construction’s expertise in managing complex projects on accelerated schedules, as specialist builders of industrial buildings, data centres and integrated logistics centres. By leveraging advanced construction methods like SMART IBS and our Industry Division’s pretensioned high-strength concrete spun piles, we ensure efficiency, quality and environmental responsibility. The increasing demand for data centres and E&E facilities aligns with our strategic focus, opening new avenues for growth in these critical sectors. Collaborating with reputable partners such as Woh Hup enhances our ability to meet industry demands and deliver reliable results.”
These two contracts have brought IJM Construction’s secured jobs year-to-date to RM1.9 billion. Including the RM6.0 billion outstanding order book as of 31 March 2024, the Group’s total order book now stands at RM7.9 billion.
